Reading a volumetrics report: cut, fill, and what the number isn't

How stockpile volumes are computed, where the uncertainty lives, and how to compare two captures honestly.

A stockpile volume arrives as a single number, which is the most misleading thing about it. Every volume is actually three decisions stacked together: a surface, a base, and a boundary. Knowing where each one came from is the difference between a figure you can defend in a room full of people and one you are quietly hoping about.

What the number is

The pile's surface comes from the aerial capture, and modern photogrammetry reconstructs a visible surface very well. The base surface is the reference that surface sits on, which may be measured before the pile existed, reconstructed from the surrounding grade, or carried forward from a prior cycle. The toe boundary decides where the pile ends and the yard begins. Volume is the space between surface and base, inside that boundary, and changing any one of the three moves the number without anything on the ground having moved at all.

Where the uncertainty lives

In practice, the uncertainty rarely lives in the flight. It lives in the base and the toe: vegetation crowding the edges, material bridging between adjacent piles, or a base surface that predates the site's current grading and no longer describes what is underneath. However, a base assumption is only a problem when it goes undisclosed, and a report that names its base and boundary conventions instead of burying them gives a reviewer something to check rather than something to trust.

Comparing two captures honestly

Cycle-over-cycle change is only as good as the consistency between cycles, which means the same reference surfaces, the same boundaries, the same methodology, and disclosure every time. This is why we run volumetrics as a program rather than as a series of unrelated flights: consistent control, versioned references, and a change map that shows where the difference occurred rather than only reporting its total. A total tells you how much. Only the map tells you where, and where is usually the question behind the question.

When to test it

For internal tracking, volumes produced to ASPRS methodology, meaning the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing standard, carry the decision, and the added cost of proving them buys nothing you will use. When the number feeds an audit, a royalty calculation, or a dispute, the requirement changes, and we difference against a surveyed reference and document the accuracy, which is the tested-to workflow, so the figure holds its shape when someone leans on it.

Overall, a volumetrics report is a claim about geometry, and like any claim it is worth what the assumptions printed beside it are worth. Read the base, the boundary, and the accuracy mode before reading the total, because those three lines determine whether the total can carry the decision. A number reported without its assumptions is not a measurement; it is an estimate, and that distinction tends to surface at the least convenient moment.
